Ellen Wong - 'Knives Chau' in Scott Pilgrim vs the World
This is your first feature film. How was it with this crazy cast?Ellen Wong: "You know what? That intimidation factor was there before going onto set, but meeting everybody - and I'm sure you've talked to a bunch of them, too - the cast was just amazing. They're all just so warm and sincere. They created this amazing, comfortable work environment. It was just fun to be there and to have a good time. And we even had about a month or so of fight training just before getting into shooting. So some of us were doing fight training, some of us were rehearsing for the band stuff, and that was perfect for us because it also was time for us to get to know each other and hang out and really find that chemistry before getting into shooting."
You become a tough girl at the end there. Was that fun?
Ellen Wong: "Yeah. I like that duality of Knives. She starts off sweet and she's kind of a bad-ass at the end, but she tries to maintain that...you know, she's still keeping it real. But I think that's what's cool about her story is that I was able to kind of show that growth within her. She's kind of going through this journey, and it was really fun to be able to put that on screen."
Satya Bhabha - 'Matthew Patel' in Scott Pilgrim vs the World
So you're an evil ex.Satya Bhabha: "Number one."
Number one evil ex. How much fun was it being the first evil ex?
Satya Bhabha: "It was amazing. The movie kind of takes a left turn into Crazyville when I bust through the ceiling. You're sort of in this cute indie romantic comedy, a little bit of music, some fun acting, and then suddenly I bust through the ceiling and you're in Crazy Town. And I think that really that was an amazing challenge for us, for Edgar [Wright], we all worked on that. The way that the fight turned out is just amazing."
You kind of break out in a Bollywood number. Was it fun choreographing that?
Satya Bhabha: "Yeah, that was a total blast. At first I was like, 'Do I just do this [shrugging his shoulders] the whole time?' But then I got on Youtube, did a little research, figured some stuff out. And yeah at the end of the day I'm really happy about what we came up with. A little kung fu, a little Bollywood, you know? If you're going to die at the end of a scene, you want to have danced and sung and fought before it."
I've been trying to figure out how to describe this movie and I can't figure it out.
Satya Bhabha: "All right, you want to know how to describe this movie? It is a multiplayer action comedy driven by music."
That's good. I'm really impressed.
Satya Bhabha: "Shoot, and romance - also there's romance. Okay, it is a multiplayer romantic action comedy driven by music. How's that?"
That's awesome. Did you read the graphic novel before you took part in the film?
Satya Bhabha: "You know, I read the graphic novel before we shot. I hadn't read it before I first had my first meeting it. I kind of met with Edgar [Wright], I wanted to make sure that everything was in the bag, and as soon as it was I went out and read all of the five books. They're so great. And the sixth, like two days ago on the train back from Comic Con."
I have to read them. I saw the movie and I'm wondering why I didn't read them in the first place.
Satya Bhabha: "Oh, I'm so glad. They're such an easy read, you know? They're like beautiful and interesting and funny. It's like laughing out loud reading a comic book - what more could you want?"
Why should people see this movie?
Satya Bhabha: "Because regardless if you're into the video game references, if you're into Edgar or Michael [Cera] - all amazing reasons to see it - this movie has heart. It's like a true coming of age story about getting hurt for the thing that you love and why it's worth it."
