Efren Ramirez – Crank: High Voltage
You're in Crank 2. How does it crank it up from Crank 1 ?Efren Ramirez: "I would say it's Crank times 1,000."
You're setting the bar really high with that for expectations.
Efren Ramirez: "It is. When I read the script it was pretty intense. I was shooting a drama while I got the script and it was totally different from the first Crank. It's the same directors and same writers, and again, when you make a sequel, you want to make it to the next level, right? Kind of like The Fast and the Furious. I mean this is the fourth one and you're going, 'Alright, how far can they take it?' And when a director goes and takes it to another level, it brings all the more excitement to it, right? People are beginning to wonder because in the first film I die. In the sequel, I play my own twin brother and he's pretty much of a badass."
And you had no problem with coming back as your twin? You were fine with that idea?
Efren Ramirez: "I was fine until they said, 'Okay, you're going to learn how to ride a motorcycle. You're going to do kung-fu for three months. You're going to learn gymnastics, weaponry, and learn how to handle a gun.' I thought, 'Oh, friendly, sure. Sure.'"
It's a sweet romantic comedy I'm doing here.
Efren Ramirez: "Yeah, exactly."
And you've also got Game too, right?
Efren Ramirez: "That's right. You've got my resume back there?"
And that's with the same directors?
Efren Ramirez: "Same guys, yeah, and with Gerry Butler. Apparently I'm being connected with these big, strong guys. I'm like, 'Alright, that's great.'"
What's Game like? I hear the action in it is like balls to the wall.
Efren Ramirez: "It is. The cinematography itself is so amazing, the colors that they use. But again, it's with Gerry Butler and I would say it would be the next Logan's Run. It's that intense."
Who do you play?
Efren Ramirez: "I play a character named DJ Twist. He's a little out there so…"
And you're okay with playing an out there character?
Efren Ramirez: "Well, it's always a challenge because when you're on the set and you're playing the character, right, once you're off the set you walk around going, 'Yeah hey what's up cool…'"
And I also heard that you also used to race and you lost a pink slip once.
Efren Ramirez: "Yeah, I did. It's a fact. I don't know if you're familiar with Los Angeles or not, but on the 110 freeway from downtown LA to Pasadena the freeway kind of turns. It has a bunch of winds and turns. So my brothers and I used race on the freeways, like at 3 o'clock in the morning…"
That's not good.
Efren Ramirez: "I know! It's a kid thing. So I had lost my pink slip so I had to use my brother's car to gain my pink slip back."
