The Twilight Saga: Eclipse Screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg

First off, Dexter. I'm really disappointed you're not going to be back for the next season of Dexter.

Melissa Rosenberg: "Me too."

Because last season was kick ass, and I don't know how they're going to top it.

Melissa Rosenberg: "I don't either. It was a cruel thing to do to just sort of blow things up and, 'Bye.' But there's some just really talented writers who have taken over, and some also who have been on since the beginning."

It's not going to be the same.

Melissa Rosenberg: "It won't be the same, but that's, I think, for the best. I mean, any show needs to change things up once in a while. I think it's a talented group. It was an honor to serve with them. I mean, honestly it was."

When you wrote Eclipse, you didn't know David Slade was going to be directing, right?

Melissa Rosenberg: "No."

So you took the script darker and he match where you took it? This is a much darker film, to me.

Melissa Rosenberg: "Well, you have to go back to the book because the book, of course, is darker than the two previous ones. So I, in staying true to the book, I wrote it darker. And, again, staying true to the book and the script, David directed it. It's really about staying true to the original concept, yeah."

And Stephenie was actually more involved this time than she was on New Moon?

Melissa Rosenberg: "I think she was on the set more, yeah. I certainly involved her and relied on her more heavily. I do each time with each film, each screenplay to just mine her for ideas and bouncing the story around and feedback. She's invaluable."

And Breaking Dawn, it's not going to go R-rated so how are you guys going to do that if you don't take it R?

Melissa Rosenberg: "You know, I don't know what it's going to be rated. I assume it's PG-13, but you know I don't really care what it's rated as long as the story is conveyed. So the intensity of those scenes, the horror of the childbirth scene, the excitement of the sex scenes - we can convey all that. But I think what's...for instance, with sex scenes 'erotic' does not necessarily translate into graphic, you know? They're not synonymous to me. I'm going for erotic."

Wyck was saying was to remember that what we're going to be seeing is from Bella's point of view. So that must actually make it a little easier for you to write without taking it too far.

Melissa Rosenberg: "Well, there's a lot from Bella's point of view but you also have to convey what else is going on so a lot of that's going to be in Bill Condon's hands. He's not afraid of it."

And he is not the most likely choice for this movie - at least I don't think he is. How do you think he fits in?

Melissa Rosenberg: "Bill is a great storyteller. He's a writer, Academy Award-winning, so he can tell a story. He can tell one visually and on the page. And he's an elegant filmmaker and he goes into the depth of character, you look at Gods and Monsters..."

I love that movie.

Melissa Rosenberg: "I know. He can really get to some raw, human emotion. He just doesn't shy away from it so he can do glamour and sweeping epic, and he can do just gritty, raw human emotion. He's really versatile."

The Twilight Saga Producer Wyck Godfrey

I want to go straight to Breaking Dawn questions.

Wyck Godfrey: "Excellent."

How are you going to do that without going R?

Wyck Godfrey: "We are going to do everything from Bella's point of view. I mean really when you think about these movies, the great thing about them is that it's always been from Bella's point of view. Honestly, the truth is I feel like these movies should be PG-13. I feel like there's such a huge fan base that would not be able to appreciate the movies without it. And if you go from Bella's point of view, you can make it very subjective. You can really stay within her point of view and you don't really have to focus on things that might tip it over to the other side."

Because there were those rumors on the internet that Melissa was leaving out that scene.

Wyck Godfrey: "It's not being left out - trust me. You are going to experience the pain of childbirth from Bella's point of view."

How about doing it in 3-D?

Wyck Godfrey: "We've talked about it. We've actually really explored doing the second movie in 3-D because Bella becomes a vampire, and seeing how the world is, so we're exploring it. But I think none of us want to feel like we're chasing a gimmick, and I think there's a lot of people that feel like everyone's doing everything in 3-D. And the truth is, this movie's about intimacy, it's about the relationship between Edward and Bella and I'm not sure it needs it."

What about Bill Condon as the director? A lot of people look at him and think he doesn't fit.

Wyck Godfrey: "I would like to meet those people because honestly I've never met a director that understands performance and character like Bill Condon. He is going to be able to bring out performances in Rob and Kristen and Taylor that we haven't seen yet. I think the last three films he's directed he's gotten Oscar nominations or wins for his actors. And he's also a writer who understands the nuances of character. So for us, this is a really mature story. I mean, Kristen's going through stuff that she's never been through as a young woman and she needs a director to really kind of help her through that, and I'm really excited about Bill."

How will you handle Renesmee?

Wyck Godfrey: "My wife is six months pregnant and when she has her child we're going to use our daughter. No, I don't know yet. That's the fun of making movies is trying to figure this stuff up. And I think that it's going to be some combination of real actors, CG, who knows"?
