You guys all do funny so well, so how do you know when it's funny and when audiences are going to go for it?Robert Downey Jr: "Thank you for bringing the mic to me. If we are pleased in and of ourselves, we're really tough critics. We're always thinking."
Stuff that makes you laugh will make the audience laugh. Is that the gauge?
Robert Downey Jr: "If Todd likes it. I think he's kind of the arbiter of what is not just funny, but what is his kind of branded standard. It's five star."
Todd Phillips: "As long as it feels real and authentic and organic to what we're doing. I think that's the first big step – and if we laugh. And if we don't, we kind of huddle in a corner and go, 'This isn't working. How do we make this funnier?' And one of us will come up with an idea, hopefully."
Robert Downey Jr: "I mean, let's be honest here. 25 minutes ago nobody knew who this guy was. And due to the sweat of his own brow, his long career unnoticed, and then Todd Phillips bringing him out of entire obscurity, and then they thought, 'What do we do now?' They brought me in to class up the joint."
Todd Phillips: "That's exactly it."
Robert Downey Jr: "And the truth be told is it was a huge education for me, and I'd be happy to work only with these two for the rest of my life."
What did you learn from them?
Todd Phillips: "Why didn't you say that to Extra? You say that to About.com." [Editorial: No, I'm not offended by this. Phillips' is a funny guy.]
Robert Downey Jr: "No, this is manageable."
Todd Phillips: "I'm teasing by the way. She heard what I said to Katie [another journalist who said she liked The Hangover] and I know About.com."
Robert Downey Jr: "Your retraction seemed so sincere even I buy them."
