Dianna Agron - 'Sarah' in I Am Number Four
Glee vs a big movie like this...What were your thoughts when you stepped onto the set?Dianna Agron: "You know, it's always great to step into a new character, and then at the same time at the end of this I so missed Quinn and Glee and all of my family. It's like I'm so fortunate that I've never worked with a bad crew or a bad cast. And you do, you have this family-like environment and you bond and you jell, and often times you end up working again with the same people. And, yeah, it kept last year very exciting. Even though it was mostly filled with work, it was amazing work and I couldn't complain for a moment."
You came into the project a little late, so how tough was it to get ready to play her?
Dianna Agron: "I think when the writing's good, it's not that difficult because it seems relatable. You can always find pieces of yourself in any character, and then you find all the rest of the strokes. And luckily DJ [Caruso, the director] had us go out to Pittsburgh and he showed us all the locations, because typically you shoot out of order so he showed us the palate. 'Here's going to be your high school. Here's your house. Here's your bedroom. This is this set piece.' So you really had a very vivid picture of what all the surroundings were going to be, and then we plugged away and here we are. It's a final product right now."
They looked at so many girls for this role. Did you have to screen test to see if there was chemistry?
Dianna Agron: "See, that was the unique situation. There wasn't really time for it. By the time I was cast, from first meeting DJ to the table read, I think it was only four days or something like that. So Alex [Pettyfer] and I met really quickly, somewhat awkwardly, the day before and just kind of hashed out, 'Where are you from? What do you believe in? Do you like dogs?'"
So did you know you'd have that onscreen chemistry or were you nervous going in?
Dianna Agron: "I wasn't nervous but at the same time, it's about believing in your acting partner. And if they're at least excited and willing to go there, you know that you have a platform and then hopefully, you know, you just keep working at it."
This is such a great love story. What makes you believe in your character's part of it?
Dianna Agron: "Well I think that some people might see it as a bit cheesy, but at the end of the film Alex's line...John's line to Sarah is, 'You know, we only fall for one person.' And I think that in this day and age every day you're hearing about a couple breaking up or divorce or things like that. Our nation is so prone to things being disposable, whether it's your computer, your car, your plant, your dog, your spouse, it's kind of a nice thought to think of things as - you know, relationships - as being something worth fighting for, and perhaps it takes a little more time and effort, but don't give up as easily. So that's what I take away from it."
