Derek Mears from Predators and 'Jason Voorhees' in Friday the 13th
So I hear there's a possibility there won't be a Friday the 13th 2. What's up with that?Derek Mears: "You know what? There's so many rumors back and forth on what's going to happen, what's not going to happen. I really don't know. I've heard at one point it was greenlit and then it's not greenlit, and that it's happening again and then it's not happening again. So we're on the pendulum of not happening…"
Why? People love horror movies.
Derek Mears: "I don't know. I really don't know. I think it's all up to the studio. I talked to Platinum Dunes and they said they would drop what they're doing right now if the studios wanted to do it. So, we're just waiting to see. My own personal opinion, I think they're waiting to see what happens with this and maybe if it does well, maybe they'll greenlight part two which would be awesome."
That would be awesome because I'm ready for you to be back in character.
Derek Mears: "Oh, you're so kind. That's what I told them early on, I go, 'If I come back, that's awesome. Even if I don't, I'm a fan of Friday the 13th. I just want to see more of them myself so just keep them going.'"
Okay, Predators - I know you can't say much, but what can you say?
Derek Mears: "About Predators? What can I say about Predators?... One thing I will say that K.N.B. Effects knocked the Predator design out of the ballpark. It's hard because you have to look at things, myself what I do is I look at it as a fan first and fan side of me was like a little child jumping up and down trying to keep it together. Because a lot of times when you hear like, 'Here's a new version or a different take on a classic, iconic character,' you're like, 'I don't believe it until I see it.' But actually seeing some of the new Predator designs - unbelievable. Unbelievable. So I'm really, really excited."
And you're a Predator?
Derek Mears: "I am a Predator. I can't say which one. I'm a very specific one, but Fox has threatened me that if give it away, that they're going to break my kneecaps for some reason so… But things career-wise I'm so lucky. I just signed a contract for a new show today. I'm going to plug the show. It's for a movie called Deathgames with Samuel L Jackson and Kellan Lutz. So I'm real excited. It's a real small cast. It's with Universal. It's an action movie but it's along the lines kind of like Taken where the action's kind of in the background. It's more kind of character-driven and I'm really excited to be a part of it."
Can you say anything about who you're playing?
Derek Mears: "My character's called Brutus Jackson and I'm a big bad-ass. How weird for my career."
Isn't it strange how they keep casting you as a bad guy?
Derek Mears: "My background's comedy but I keep playing 'I'm going to punch your face in' guys."
Back to Predators, the parts that I've seen – the trailers and clips that they've shown – look amazing. How close do you think it's going to be to what we've already seen in the Predator's franchise?
Derek Mears: "I think it's very close to what we've seen in part one. I believe they wrote it so they could fit anywhere, but it's almost as if it were a sequel. But it's hard R. It's back to what we want where it's brutally violent. It's a roller coaster ride. When I read the script there's like hardly any breathing room. It's always something happens somewhere, 'Move, move, move,' and by the time I was done reading it for the first time, I was exhausted. So I'm excited to see how it turns out. I haven't seen anything besides the trailers but I have a lot of expectations, high expectations."
What's really weird is that when they said that Adrien Brody was starring in it, I was like, "What the heck?" The guy's not an action star. You know action – how does he handle it?
Derek Mears: "He did a really good job. I was really impressed with Adrien. He put like 15 pounds of lean muscle on. And working with Adrien, he's such a professional. Because a lot of times the misconception is that when you're an actor and you're wearing make-up on, people are like, 'Oh, he's just a big guy in a suit,' and you don't get a lot of respect. Adrien, when we did scenes together, was so kind. When they did the reverse shot where the shot – we had scenes together went they went on his side of the shot, a lot of times he could walk out and do whatever he wants to and have some stand-in do the lines. It was super freezing, he was the one wearing the least amount of clothes, he didn't leave. He would stand there and deliver the lines so I could do my performance, and I'm like, 'You are an amazing human being.' So a lot of respect to Adrien. He's a great, great guy."
I know you can't say what you looked like, but what did you think when you saw yourself as a Predator?
Derek Mears: "I thought if the 12 year old Derek knew what he knew today, that I was going to be in an amazing Predator suit, I would lose my mind. Actually there was times…I don't want to steal that quote from – I didn't mean to – but there were times when Nimrod Antal, our director, on set he would jump up and down and scream in joy, 'There's a 12 year old fat kid named Nimrod who has a Predator poster on his wall losing his mind right now!' He just cheerled the entire way."
