Director Darren Lynn Bousman Saw IV
Why come back for another movie? I've talked to you before, and you said you wouldn't.
Darren Lynn Bousman: "I remember, I remember. The script. The script was great. I wouldn't have done this unless I thought it was going to succeed. It's too big of a risk to take. And the script was great. Tobin called me one day, and he was like, 'Darren, you've got to come back. We're all coming back.' And I looked and every single person was coming back. And I was like, 'The script was great. I've got to do it.' That was all it took a good script."
But this is a challenge - #4. You don't feel like that's pushing it a little?
Darren Lynn Bousman: "Yeah, it's pushing it, but that's what's exciting about it. What else is never anywhere else in the entire history of cinema would they let me get away with what I get away with in the Saw films. I would have producers watching over me. I would have execs there. There's not. There's such a freedom making the Saw films. It's liberating. It's great."
Has that changed throughout the course, or has it always been that way?
Darren Lynn Bousman: "You know, no. The more I make them, the more they trust me, so it's great."
But you don't want to be pigeonholed as being the Saw guy.
Darren Lynn Bousman: "I'm doing a rock opera next, so I don't think "
That sounds so cool. When do you start?
Darren Lynn Bousman: "I've already started. We're actually in Los Angeles doing the music right now, recording the music. We start shooting September 10 in Toronto."
It's a rock opera, but will it have a lot of talking in it or is the story told [through music]?
Darren Lynn Bousman: "There is no talking. There's not one spoken line. Not one spoken line of dialogue. It's all music from beginning to end."
Where does the music come from?
Darren Lynn Bousman: "It's written by two composers that did the show three times in Los Angeles and off-Broadway. But our cast is ridiculous. I can't tell you who they are but the names that when you see them on a poster, you're going to flip out. 'How can this group of people be in this movie?' I mean, it's people you would never know, people that you would never that would sing."
You would never associate them with music?
Darren Lynn Bousman: "Never."
How did you talk them into it?
Darren Lynn Bousman: "The script is great. The guys wrote a great script. I shot a short film to try to raise financing for it. We just sent them the short and said, 'Here's what we did in like five minutes. Imagine if we could do it in 90 minutes.' That's how we did it."
Back to Saw IV, you've done everything already. How much more can audiences expect from the fourth film?
Darren Lynn Bousman: "You know, hopefully a lot. There's a lot more to tell in this world. We've got a lot of surprises, a lot. And I think that the twist in this one is amazing. It's like the best of all the Saw magic tricks. You know every Saw film is like a magic trick. We show everyone something and then they think they know what it is, and then we pull out the other card at the end and say, 'A-ha, you didn't know.' Well this one is like the David Blaine of magic tricks, the Criss Angel of magic tricks. You think you know what the movie's about and in the very last two minutes of the movie we show you what it really is. And hopefully that will get them."
Are you going to do number 5?
Darren Lynn Bousman: "No, I'm doing Repo and then I'm moving on to work with Dimension."
Are you sure?
Darren Lynn Bousman: "I swear. I swear, I swear."
You've told me this before.
Darren Lynn Bousman: "I swear. I know, I know. You can quote me. I bet the house and farm on it. I can't."
Before IV do you have a favorite of the first three?
Darren Lynn Bousman: "I like III. Yeah, III's the most emotional in my mind. I think that I like that about the horror film. It wasn't just violent. I mean it was an extremely violent movie but there was more emotion to it, there was more character building. And to me, I think it was my favorite."
