Common – 'Barnes' in Terminator Salvation

What is it with all the action, guns, fighting movies when you're a peaceful person?

Common: "I know. I guess it came from my inner thoughts of wanting to be an actor and take on roles that are different from who I am. I started and got my foot in the door with this, but I'm looking to expand and do all type of roles. Do drama, do love stories, do everything, but right now this was how I was able to get my foot in the door."

I would imagine that because you're used to the action, doing this kind of action in a Terminator movie wasn't that difficult for you, was it?

Common: "No, it wasn't that difficult. But one thing is I've been in some action films and I didn't get to do a lot of action scenes though. This one I've been getting to do more scenes, action-wise. And I just have more work to do on this film anyway, which I love. Because you know as an actor, you want to do it. You want to do things. So this film I didn't have to do a lot of gun training because I did that before. But I did have to shoot a different type of RPG, which is a missile launcher. I had to train a little bit for that. And, you know, just stay fit. That's really where it came."

What's it like actually stepping onto a Terminator set? It's a whole other world, right?

Common: "It's another world. You're like, 'I'm in the Terminator.' And the world that's created, you feel the world when you're there. You're like, 'This is the world.' And you see it. When I've seen some of the footage played back, I'm like, 'That world that's been created – we're living in that world.' It's something to see, you know, post-apocalyptic world, to see it really looking like the way it would look if the world was destroyed. It's a scary thing but it also triggers the instinct of survival in you."
