Clive Owen – 'Smith' in Shoot 'Em Up
Did you go through hell making this?
Clive Owen: "It was a good laugh. It was fun. Yeah, it was a lot of fun."
You don't mind all that stunt work?
Clive Owen: "No, no. We moved fast as well. We never sort of did anything for too long. We had a lot to achieve. It was only a short shoot, really. It was 10 weeks and it's crammed with action and so we had to move fast."
When you first saw the script what was it that drew you in?
Clive Owen: "I thought it was the freshest, wildest thing I'd read in years. It was so crazy, irreverent and witty – smart and witty. And it was like an action film that delivered on the action front but with just such a sort of particular wit and humor."
Did you ever think they might have pushed it a little too far or think not far enough, or just perfect?
Clive Owen: "I think it's bang on. It's crazy and wild and I don't know. It's certainly such a heightened world that the film's set in. I don't think it's related to anything in our real lives so I don't think you can push it too far, really."
It's action and it's comedy. What's more difficult for you to do in this kind of environment? Was it the action or getting the comedy timing?
Clive Owen: "You don't really separate the two because they come together, really. Because even the physicality of the action is witty. You know, the sort of spinning around…just the way the action unravels is fun. So they're very much bedded together."
