Cameron Diaz - 'Lenore' in The Green Hornet
Can you tell us what it was like being on such a male-dominated set?Cameron Diaz: "It's really not that any different really because guys are just guys, and they're kind of fun to be around and easy-going. They treat you good because you're the only girl on set. They get you food. They put things under your feet when you need to put your legs up. They wrap you in cashmere when you're cold."
They sound like quite the gentlemen.
Cameron Diaz: "They were great. They were really, really great."
And you kicked their butts even though they were so nice.
Cameron Diaz: "Just kidding. Not at all. I'm just teasing."
What captivates us about superheroes?
Cameron Diaz: "Well, I think it's you know what we aspire to be, what we hope that we can accomplish, you know, if we were able to sort of have the bravery to do so, like how we would perform if we could in that way and save people. It's a very selfless thing to do."
Are there any funny bloopers from the set?
Cameron Diaz: "I'm sure. There's a lot of us going, 'What? What? Michel, I can't understand you. Can you come over here? What did you say? Wait, can we cut? Can we cut because I don't understand what you're saying?' That happened all the time."
What are you going to do next, Cameron? Do you know?
Cameron Diaz: "I don't. I'm unemployed looking for a job."
Chad Coleman - 'Chili' in The Green Hornet
So you play Christoph Waltz' sidekick in this?Chad Coleman: "Yeah."
You're a terrible bad guy?
Chad Coleman: "I think I'm kind of cool and suave. I'm 'Chili' so I'm chilled out. No, it's fun. You know what I mean? It's fun. Christoph is so wonderful in what he's doing. It's menacing and funny all at the same time. He's a pretty amazing actor."
Now does it change how you act when you know you're in a movie that's based on a comic book type property? Does that change how you approach a character?
Chad Coleman: "No, no. It's always still the characters on the page. They were going for realism. It wasn't any cartoony type of approach to it, you know? So it was very real. So no it didn't require anything but the same kind of professionalism and the same skills that you always bring to the table."
Is it weird when you're working with the guy who's the writer and he's also acting in the movie? That's kind of strange because that doesn't usually happen.
Chad Coleman: "Yeah. No, not with Seth though. Seth is just so much fun and so open. It was relaxing. None of his crew...all of the guys that he rolls with are just really cool dudes, man, just hanging out laughing a lot. That's the fun."
And I hear that they were really free with what you could do as far as changing up the dialogue and that kind of stuff. They let you play?
Chad Coleman: "Oh sure. Yeah, because they come from comedy so they're open to improv. 'You want to try something different? Try it.' Yeah, yeah, which makes it really relaxing. Even Michel [Gondry] is the same way. He's open to, 'Show me - show me,' so it was cool."
Is there any kind of language barrier working with Michel because he does have a pretty thick accent?
Chad Coleman: "Yeah, I was watching and saw Cameron Diaz on one of these press junkets saying like, 'Come here. I can't understand you.' It wasn't too difficult. You know, Seth was kind of the go-between on a lot of that. But for the most part I could understand him. Michel Gondry's funny, you know? He's got a great sense of humor. He and Seth are a lot like mischief boys, like we're on the playground. I kind of connected with that so it wasn't hard to understand them."
His films always have such a specific vibe. You know when you're watching a Michel Gondry film. Is it like that for Green Hornet?
Chad Coleman: "I think it was just the perfect marriage between he and Seth. The things that you would normal do in post-production, he wanted to do it in camera. I think it was the perfect match between he and Seth because they're very naughty boys."
There wasn't a lot of CG.
Chad Coleman: "It was mostly in camera. We had an explosion, the scene with an explosion where you would use a long lens. We did it for real and it was like, 'Oh my god.' I mean the hair was standing up on the back of my neck. I thought my polyester suit was going to melt on me. I'm serious."
Did you fear for your life?
Chad Coleman: "Oh my god, it was amazing. It was like an adrenaline rush but it was like, 'Oh my god!' I was asking the stunt guys, 'I didn't know that it was going to be that hot!' It's the one that you see in the promo."
It's good that he used it. You didn't suffer for no reason.
Chad Coleman: "No, no, no. There you go. If I've got to melt, then at least use it."
And you've got Horrible Bosses too, right?
Chad Coleman: "Yeah. Horrible Bosses is going to come out in June. That's another...oh my god. Jason Sudeikis, Jason Bateman, Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Aniston, everybody is in that movie so it's pretty exciting."
