Bill Hader - Paul
Are you having fun at Comic Con?Bill Hader: "Yeah, yeah, it's pretty crazy. I used to come here as just a fan 10 years ago. So this is like my first time with a project that I got to go, so I'm excited to finally come and hang out."
But you can't walk around the floor. People would be mobbing you.
Bill Hader: "You'd be surprised. Well, I mean I haven't tried to walk around the floor but I remember even going as a fan and the floor being kind of really imposing and kind of like so many things to look at that I went a little insane."
So tell me how you fit into Paul?
Bill Hader: "In Paul, it's about Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are two comic book geeks come to Comic Con. They go on this road trip and they encounter an alien - Paul - and Jason Bateman and Joe Lo Truglio and myself play these FBI agents who are trying to get Paul back and put him where he should be."
So you've been holding Paul captive?
Bill Hader: "You need to see the movie."
So what's it like on the set? That's a lot of improv guys.
Bill Hader: "It is, but we didn't improvise that much. It's interesting. It's kind of like the real difference between the UK and American. Like, the UK they write and act in a way where you think that they're improvising but they're not. They're just really good. And in America we improvise a lot. But, not really - sometimes. But it was very collaborative. Like Simon and Nick are just insanely collaborative guys. They also wrote the script and so it was great for me and these guys - me and Joe - to kind of like do a scene and then come and talk to them and be like, 'Was that all right? What if we did this? What if we did that?'"
But isn't it also a little weird to be acting alongside the guys who wrote it?
Bill Hader: "I'm always in that position. Superbad, Seth [Rogen] wrote the movie and I was acting with him. Hot Rod, those guys wrote that movie. In Tropic Thunder I was with Ben [Stiller] and he wrote that movie."
So it would be kind of weird if you weren't acting with the writer.
Bill Hader: "Yeah, I know. I'm not used to it not being the other way."
Why are fans going to fall in love with Paul?
Bill Hader: "Well, I think fans here will freak out because it's about them. It's kind of about really caring about something and not caring what other people think, and that kind of enthusiasm. And what if that thing became a reality? It's cool in that way."
