Benicio Del Toro – 'Lawrence Talbot' in The Wolfman
How did you physically prepare for this beastly character?Benicio Del Toro: "Well you know, actually putting on that suit was like a work-out. Every time you put on that suit it just was exhausting and very hot. I remember changing my shirt maybe four or five times every time I put on that suit – and that makeup is not fun. It's great. Rick Baker did a terrific job, but it's not fun."
What was your reaction the first time you actually saw yourself as the wolf?
Benicio Del Toro: "I thought I looked like my dog. But my reaction was like, 'Terrific job.' I like those classic horror – Universal classic horror movies – so I thought we were on the right track."
How long was the makeup process?
Benicio Del Toro: "It would take about four hours and add two, so it might be six hours. But I'll tell you, putting it on, a lot of fun because it's happening, right? Taking it off, not fun because you're tired, everybody is at home going to sleep and you're stuck for two hours."
Why were you so passionate about telling this story?
Benicio Del Toro: "Well I think it's like the original story hasn't been told in 69 years so here we are giving it a stab and also doing an homage."
Anthony Hopkins – 'John Talbot' in The Wolfman
Tell me about working on this because you have to develop a relationship with Benicio. How was that?Anthony Hopkins: "Easy. Yeah, you just learn your lines, show up, and do it."
Is it really that easy?
Anthony Hopkins: "Yeah. Why should it be complicated? You just get on set and do it."
But you have to play a guy who's off.
Anthony Hopkins: "He's quiet. He's a little quiet. He's a little weird."
How does Joe Johnston run his set because he came in a little bit late to the process?
Anthony Hopkins: "Yeah, he had quite a tough task ahead of him because he didn't have much preparation. He's one of the best directors I've worked with. He's so well prepared. He's amenable, he's friendly. He's easy to work with. He's not some sort of guru, you know, those guys who shout and scream. He's very feet on the ground and knows what he wants to do and knows what he wants to see. That's why it's good to work with."
Why are we still so fascinated by werewolves?
Anthony Hopkins: "No idea. It's part of our mythology. If I was a psychiatrist, I could tell you."
And one last question… Working with Kenneth Branagh on Thor.
Anthony Hopkins: "He's the greatest. I'm a great fan of his. I've known him over the years but this is a new friendship with him. He's terrific. Brilliant man, really quite brilliant."
