WALL-E Writer/Director Andrew Stanton – Winner of the 'Hollywood Animation' Award
So another Oscar for Pixar?
Andrew Stanton: "Oh I don't know. It's a little early. I'm not going to jinx anything."
That movie was just so terrific. No dialogue for so long…
Andrew Stanton: "Oh, thank you. Well, it was all about the way we did sound. I mean it wasn't silent. It was the magic of Ben Burtt, the guy who did R2D2. He was really part of the genius behind that."
Was that a hard sell?
Andrew Stanton: "Fortunately I didn't have to sell it to anybody. You've got to remember we're a small group. I just turned to John [Lasseter] and said, 'This is what I want to do,' and he said, 'Okay.' And then he finished his sandwich. That was pretty much it."
I have to admit this. When I first saw a couple of pictures when you guys put them out I went, "I don't know…It's a robot. How am I going to connect?" Then you did it.
Andrew Stanton: "That was the whole point. I knew it was a love story. I knew that it wasn't going to be just a boy film."
It's for all ages. Did you expect it to get the grandmothers and the 10 year olds?
Andrew Stanton: "Well, we strive to go for everybody and the way we do that is by, frankly, in a weird way, ignoring the audience and just going with what we like. Because we kind of have all ages tastes so we just trust that."
So you kind of can fit in all those shoes.
Andrew Stanton: "Because we're just immature enough that it gets the kids, so that's just how it works."
Are you busy working now on [John Carter of Mars]?
Andrew Stanton: "Oh yeah, I'm very busy right now working on the next picture."
Is that live action?
Andrew Stanton: "It's semi-live action, yeah."
How do you do semi-live action?
Andrew Stanton: "Well, because there are a lot of characters that are computer generated so it's mixed. I mean, to be honest, every movie is starting to be like that these days."
Maybe they'll just replace all the actors and it'll all be CGI.
Andrew Stanton: "Yeah, yeah, yeah."
It'll be easier to work, right?
Andrew Stanton: "I don't know about that. You wouldn't know all the animators… I have to deal with human beings, not computers, so it's a lot of gnarly artists out there."
WALL-E 2?
Andrew Stanton: "Well, maybe. Not me. Four years with any character's a long time. That's how long you're in high school and I'm ready to graduate."
