Amanda Righetti - Friday the 13th
The trailer looked really freaky. Was it that freaky filming it?
Amanda Righetti: "You know what? At times it was, but at other times we had a great cast so a lot of laughs, a lot of giggles. Right before it I'd be like, 'Derek, shut up! Stop making me laugh!' But there were times where it was a little bit creepy. But the trailer is so cool."
Now you said it's kind of hard to get that creepy feeling when you're giggling around with people, so how do you find that? How do you find that adrenaline rush in you?
Amanda Righetti: "You know, it's weird. It's kind of like as soon as… You just kind of take a breath and as soon as the cameras start to roll you just find your space. You get into it. Derek [Mears] was really great that way. We worked really well together and he's such a sweet guy. It was sometimes very strange because he's such a big guy and he's got this mask on and it's so creepy but he's so sweet. He's like, 'Are you okay?' You're like, 'You're not supposed to be nice to me!' But yeah, it was good. We worked really well together."
What was it like the first time you actually saw him in the mask?
Amanda Righetti: "My heart jumped like out of my throat. It was very creepy. It was very creepy, and especially the setting. We're like in the middle of the woods, you know? It was funny because we would play jokes on each other because we'd have to walk down this long corridor of this pathway to go to the restroom. So we'd be like, 'Derek, go hide in the bushes. Sadowski's going down to go to the bathroom.' It was funny. We'd play jokes like that all the time."
What's the appeal of actually joining the Friday the 13th franchise?
Amanda Righetti: "It's such a cult classic and so many people follow the movie. There's something about the revamping of it that is really exciting. And, you know, the producers – being a part of Platinum Dunes, Michael Bay's company and Paramount – that, I don't know, the whole new kind of face that it takes on is really exciting."
The first film when you look back on it now kind of plays out campy. This one doesn't, right? The tone is totally different?
Amanda Righetti: "It's night and day. It really is. I think for the time that the original came out it was very creepy. But I think that as society evolves and movies get more gory and more slasher, there's a certain demand upon the audience that they want that kind of slasher movie to be something that they're entertained by. I think that, you know, as the times have changed, movies have changed too. The producers and the writers really, I think, did a great job of adapting it to evolve into what moviegoers will like now. I mean, hopefully they do."
You said the producers is one of the main reasons you were attracted to it, but it is a remake and remakes are always tricky. So were you leery at all?
Amanda Righetti: "You never know. It's always a crap shoot so there's always that small doubt in your mind of what it's going to be. But, you know, Marcus Nispel who did the remake of Texas Chainsaw - it was a creepy movie, such a creepy movie. And meeting with Brad [Fuller] and Andrew [Form] about it and talking to them about it, it was kind of like this passion project so my fears and doubts about it kind of went away. And of course when we were shooting there were days that it was like, 'Oh, this is going to be great,' and days where you were like, 'Oh no, I hope…' So there was a little bit of that, but I guess we don't really know until the movie comes out whether people are really going to respond to it or not."
Who do you play?
Amanda Righetti: "My character is, her name is Whitney and I play Jared Padalecki's sister. And our mom has been sick in the hospital and I've been taking care of her, and my boyfriend kind of like coaxes me out to go on a camping trip. And all mayhem sort of breaks loose."
How much did you know about the franchise before you joined this one?
Amanda Righetti: "I was familiar with it. Who hasn't heard of Friday the 13th? So yeah, I was definitely familiar with the franchise."
