Transcript:How to Create Texture in Men's Hair

Hello. I’m Albert Babaev, from Mike and Son Barber Shop located in downtown Manhattan, for About.com. And today I’m going to show you how to properly texturize your hair.

Texture Cream Characteristics

I’m going to be using a texture cream in Ryan’s hair. Something very light, non-alcohol based, something that won’t stiffen and will kind of hold his style together and have flexibility and still have a nice textured look.

Add Extra For Thick Hair

And I’ll probably want to put like around this much texture cream. Work it in. Make sure I get an even spread. Pretty much just rub it all over. Now if you have thick hair like Ryan you might have just a little bit more texture cream. Want to get everything in there, nice and even.

Layer Down Hair

And then gently with your fingers almost layer it down. So, the texture still shows, it won’t look too flat. If you have any parts that are sticking up just gently with your fingers or with a comb just gently put it in place. And, we have a little bit of texture. How’s that look? Make sure you work it in. You don’t want any clumps. Work it in and then you want to kind of rub your fingers all the way through – through your scalp. Get it evenly distributed.

Work Hair All Over

Alright. Yeah, give it a really good mix and just kind of work it all over and just kind of go crazy 'cause you want that textured look. You can stop before it dries and then you’ll have trouble bringing it down. Just real gently, 'cause you don’t want to flatten the texture, you want some volume still. Yeah, just real gently.

Make Sure to Evenly Distribute Cream on Hands

So, Ryan, the most important about using texture cream is to make sure you have it evenly distributed in your hands. Just rub it through. Go crazy. On your scalp, just rub it through, and then just gently. You don’t want to kind of flatten it, you don’t want to matt it down. Just gently tap it down so it still has some volume, still has some texture to it.
