Hi I'm Stephanie from Epicenter Salon in Portland, Oregon for About.com. And these are my tips for maintaining short hair.
Get an Easy to Maintain Hair Cut
You want to create a horseshoe parting to isolate the top portion of the head. I will be using the clipper over comb method. You can also use clipper guards as well. I'm going to be taking this as short as a number 2 or number 3. Starting in this first section and working my way back.
Go back through and crosscheck your sections to make sure that the layer is nice and even. Alright at this point I'm going to be cleaning up the hair around the ear and sideburn as well as trimming up around the neck.
Trim Around the Neck and Ears
Cleaning up right around the ear well will give you that freshly cut look and keep your neck trimmed up.
Since everyone has different hairlines naturally you can see I cleaned up Dougles neckline the way his hair naturally wants to grow. Some people prefer a rounded shape while some people prefer to leave corners.
Add Texture to the Top of the Hair
All right moving into the same sections we used to bluntly cut the top portion of the haircut I will be slicing out texture into this haircut. By adding texture it adds an easier grow out due to the varying lengths growing out at different times.
Cut and Texturize the Fringe
Moving into the fringe area this can be personalized with a short length, you can also maintain length to leave a bang. In this case I'm going to texturize most of the weight out so there is an option to brush the hair up, or wear it to the side.
Using a pliable yet firm stucco paste with a matte finish to style the hair.
