Hi I'm Stephanie from Epicenter Salon in Portland Oregon for About.com. And these are my tips for adding texture to men's hair.
Take Away Weight Using a Feather Razor
When adding texture to men's hair there are multiple ways you can do this depending on the texture of the hair. Also the density. You can take away weight using texturizing shears; you can also use a feather razor or shears.
Generally I begin one fingers length from the scalp. I take my shears take one pass through the hair, then I take another pass about halfway through and another. Actually building weight in the section of the hair.
How to Use the Feather Razor to Texturize
When using the razor to texturize you want to hold the hair straight up at a 90-degree angle. Make sure you hold your razor with the blade facing the ends of the hair using your finger to direct the finger. Gently place the razor next to the shaft of the hair and slide up removing weight. When texturizing with your shears, this is very similar to the texturizing using your feather razor. Opening up your blade and placing it against the hair shaft and carving out areas where hair has more weight.
