Transcript:How to Get Long Dreadlocks for Men

Hi, My name is Brian Cheeks, actor and dreadlock enthusiast, and I'm here for About.com to talk to you about how to get long dreadlocks for men.  It is a process in creating such a unique look.

Know When Your Ready for Forming Dreadlocks

Keep in mind that you have to let your hair grow, at least, for three months from a fresh haircut.  Now depending on the size of your stylist's fingers, that will determine exactly when your locks can get started.

Twist Hair with Pomade

The first step in creating long dreadlocks would be to first, to take a small amount of product - and it could be a product of your choice - whether it's beeswax, shea butter, or a cream blend mixture - you apply that to the end of the comb and place it at the root.  You then twist the hair in the comb to the right , you turn the comb one full completion until the hair has completely rolled around the comb.  You then place a slide-in clip in the middle of the shaft.  You have just created your fist lock.

Dry Hair to Fuse the Dreadlocks

Before moving on to the drying phase be sure that every lock on your head has been completed.  The next step in creating long dreadlocks would be going under the dryer but before you step foot under the dryer, place a paper wrap around the front of your head, placing about where your hair line is.  This is key because it keeps your hair in place while you're under the dryer and so it's not blowing all over the place.  You remain under the dryer for approximately 30-45 minutes depending on how much hair you have and the desired time needed for the product to fuse with your hair.

Dreadlocks Require Routine Maintenance

Once you're finished under the dryer. remove all of the clips, oil your scalp, and there you have it.  Even though this process is complete, the key to getting long dreadlocks is keeping up with the routine maintenance.  I would suggest getting routine maintenance done at least every two weeks to start, and then once your hair has grown, you can get them done every four weeks or as needed.
