Hi, I'm Jacob Taxis for About.com. In this video, you will learn how to avoid ingrown hairs for men. Ingrown hairs can be a major problem, especially for men who shave often. Shaving is the number one cause of ingrown hairs. When hair is shaved too close to the skin, the sharp hair shaft will often slide back beneath the skin or grow sideways, causing bumps. There are, however, a few tips you can keep in mind for avoiding this annoying and sometimes unsightly condition.

Exfoliate Skin to Avoid Ingrown Hairs

First, exfoliate your skin everyday using a gentle face scrub. Using a face exfoliant will help to remove layers of dead skin that might otherwise block hairs from growing properly and, therefore, helps to prevent ingrown hairs. Move the cleanser in a circular fashion to oust any hair tips that might be growing into the skin.

Shave Properly to Avoid Ingrown Hairs

Second, if you're someone who likes to shave very close to the skin, now is the time to adjust your technique. Refrain from placing too much pressure on the razor as you shave because this may easily cause another round of ingrown hairs. Instead, shave gently with a single-blade safety razor. Multi-blade razors actually pull hair shafts upward in order to cut them. This can easily result in the hair tips falling back beneath the surface where they can grow into the skin. Electric razors with spinning blades should be avoided as well. Because these razors cut in various directions, there is a chance hair shafts will twist back into the skin.

More Shaving Tips

Third, be sure to shave with the grain of your facial hair – that is, shave in the direction in which your hair grows. Though shaving against the grain will likely result in a closer shave, that close, clean shave might cost you in the form of ingrown hairs. Fourth, always use a good, lubricating shave gel or cream and keep your face moisturized. Shaving in the shower is another great option. The less friction, the greater your chances of avoiding ingrown hairs. After shaving, moisturize with aftershave gels or lotions.

Wash Face Often

Fifth, keep your face as clean as possible. Washing your face once or twice a day will help prevent the build up of dirt and grease which can clog your pours and foster ingrown hairs. When possible, wear collarless shirts, as high-collars can often spread dirt and oils across your chin and neck. With proper facial care and shaving habits, you can greatly improve your chances of avoiding painful ingrown hairs.
