## Transcript:How to Create a Cheat Sheet for Adding Negative and Positive Numbers

Hi! I’m Samantha Lake for About.com and today I’m going to show you how to create a cheat sheet for adding positive and negative numbers. We’re here at “Count Me in Tutoring” in Bedford Corners, NY.### The Cheat Sheet Shows Positive and Negatives on a Number Line

Making a cheat sheet, or as us tutors like to say*study guide*, can help you remember what to do when adding positive and negative numbers also known as integers. A great place to start is the number line theory. We can use the number line as a model to help us visualize how to add signed integers. Adding goes to the right. Adding negative numbers go to the left.

### Follow Rules for Adding Negative and Positive Numbers

There are also several rules and properties that define how to perform these basic operations. Some rules you should always follow are: Adding rules, adding positive plus positive equal positive. For instance 3 plus 4 equals 7. An integer with no sign in front of it is positive integer.Negative plus negative equals negative. Negative 7 plus negative 2 equals negative nine.To add numbers with different signs, keep the sign of the number with the largest absolute value and subtract the smallest absolute value from the largest.

### Use the Examples for Adding Positive and Negative Numbers

Here's how to add two positive integers:4 + 5 = ? If you start at positive four on the number line and move five units to the right, you end up at positive nine. Here's how to add two negative integers:-2 + (-5) = ? If you start at negative two on the number line and move five units to the left, you end up at negative seven.

Here's how to add a positive integer to a negative integer:-3 + 6 = ? If you start at negative three on the number line and move six units to the right, you end up at positive three. These numbers have different signs, so keep the sign from the number having the greatest absolute value and subtract the smallest absolute value from the largest.

If you follow these easy steps, you will be able to make your own cheat sheet. To learn more about this and other math topics, please visit About.com. Thanks for watching.
