Hi, I’m Rachel Sussman. I’m a licensed psycho-therapist and a relationship expert and I’m here for About.com. I’m going to give you some tips for creating a long lasting marriage.
Being part of a happy and healthy couple has many wonderful benefits. It’s great to come home every day and know that there’s someone there to share a meal with. Couples can be each other’s best friends, tell each other secrets, so, there’s many great benefits to being in a relationship. And, it’s entirely possible to have a happy marriage and you just have to follow some tips.
Scheduling Date Nights Often Strengthens a Marriage
So, my first tip is the ubiquitous date night. Just like an apple a day, date night has become synonymous with marriage health and there’s a reason. Don’t go out to dinner and just look at each other, don’t discuss the kids, plan a really fun date night. One couple I worked with – they went horseback riding, they hired a chef, to come over and teach them both how to cook, and they sat down to a delicious meal, and they even went on a donut tour of New York City. Those are the kind of dates that I want couples to plan. And, another trick that I use is called my turn, your turn date. And that means, one week the husband plans the date, and the other week, the wife plans the date, and surprise each other, make it something really fun.
Being Active and Having Sex Are Important in a Healthy Marriage
Be active, do sports, go on a trapeze together. Make sure you’re having fun and you’re laughing together. Remember life is stressful and you want to see your partner a stress reliever, so make sure you’re laughing. Going to see a comic movie, or you’re watching something funny on TV. Be sure to find ways to laugh.
Be sure you’re having sex. Sex is an important part of any relationship and if you think about it – it’s really the one thing that separates friends and lovers. So, be sure you’re having sex – but not just sex – have good sex and have plenty of it.
A Lasting Marriage Relies on Mutual Kindness and Respect
Another tip is to be sure to remember to always treat your partner with kindness and respect. It’s important to remember little things – like saying please and thank you. Doing little things for each other, little acts of kindness, can often really go a long way. Remember to not take your partner for granted. Always remember to say I’m sorry.
