Transcript:How to Keep Romance Alive After Children

Hi, I'm Irina Firstein. I'm a couples therapist in New York City and I'm here for About.com. I'm going to give you some tips on how to keep romance alive after a baby.

Focus on Your Spouse to Keep Romance Alive After Children

There's no doubt that having a baby is the most amazing joyous, bonding, time in a couple's life. With the arrival of your first child, you're no longer a couple, you become a family. And no longer is your relationship just the two of you. It's been my experience that many couples today when they have a child lose focus on their marriage. The most important thing you can do for your baby, for your child, is to have a good relationship with your spouse. It creates a good environment for that child.

Take a Weekend Away to Keep Romance Alive After Children

One thing I very much recommend to couples with kids is not just a date night, once a month, a weekend away, several times a year. It is crucial to re-experience that connection between you and your spouse without a child or children nagging and tagging at your attention every minute of every day.

Communication Is Crucial to Keep Romance Alive After Children

Open and honest communication is crucial. It's crucial to connect with your spouse throughout the day -- even if it's for a second for a minute: a phone call, a walk around the block.

Remember Life Before Children to Keep Romance Alive

It's important to think about your life together before a child or when you met. And, while, it cannot be the same, there is some very important parts of that relationship before a child that has to still go on. Doing things that you used to like before like going to the movie, you know, dancing, walking through the park. Anything that you can possibly incorporate into your daily routine that just is about the two of you.
