Hi, this is Alfonso Santaniello for About.com, and today, we're going to talk about how and why social media is used in marketing.
Interact With Customers to Use Social Media in Marketing
First, keep up the interaction. The key word is social in social media. You want to interact with your customers and potential customers -- asking questions, answering questions, keep interaction through pages. Social media is a two-way street, so make sure you do keep that road open.
Reward customer loyalty. A lot of companies use social media to reward their customers and potential customers through contests, giveaways, and interaction through their social media pages.
Harness your expertise. Share your knowledge of your trade that you've learned over the years. It's only going to help with your brand recognition.
Find Potential Customers and Target Advertising to Use Social Media in Marketing
Find potential customers. Enter a keyword through Twitter, for example, and be able to find potential customers that you did not even know you had. Social media creates word-of-mouth which then generates more traffic to your pages -- creating potential customers that you didn't even know you had.
Target your online advertising. Facebook, for example, does a great job for advertising to your demographic. You provide the information to Facebook, then Facebook creates the ad to fit your target demographic.
Track Competitors to Use Social Media in Marketing
And lastly, see what your competitors are doing. Please do not copy your competitors -- that is the big no-no in social media. You do want to see what they're doing and tracking them as well. You want to see how you can be different and better yourselves through social media.
