Transcript:Walking Tour of Radio City
Welcome About.com. My name is Joyce and I’m going to take you on the Radio City Stage Door Tour.
History of Radio City Music Hall
We are in the Grand Foyer. And, it is 60 feet from the floor to the ceiling in this room. Radio City Music Hall first opened its doors on December 27th 1932. And since that time we’ve had over 300 million visitors pass through our doors. We achieved landmark status in 1978. In February of 1999 Radio City underwent the most extensive restoration of its entire history. It took eight months and 70 billion dollars.
Rising above the grand staircase is a work by a gentlemen named, Ezra Winter. It’s called the fountain of youth. As we go in, I’d like you all to notice the bronze plaques on the stainless steel doors. They represent the inner history from around the world.
We are in the theater and the inspiration behind radio city music hall was a gentlemen named Samuel Lionel Rothafel, Roxy. Roxir owned his own theater here in New York and it was so successful that the Rockefellar’s invited Roxie to help them plan radio city.
Legend has it that Roxie was traveling home from Europe on an ocean liner. Watched the sunset over the water and decided this was the look he wanted for radio city. So, you’re looking at one of our mighty Wurlitzer Pipe Organs. 4,000 pipes that supply the sound for our organs.
Meet a Radio Rockette
My name is Elizabeth and I am a 7th year Radio Rockette. Grew up always wanting to be a professional dancer. Just get the energy from the audience. To get the comradery from the girls around you. And you’re only as strong as your weakest girl and there are no weak girls in our line.
Events at Radio City Music Hall
Here’s another one of our event hallways…With wonderful photos of people who’ve performed here. We have Michael Flatley, Lord of the Dance, Toni Braxton. Carlos Santana. Jose Carreras, BB King, this is Meatloaf’s guitar.
We’ve also had sporting events on our stage. And, then, one year, the New York Liberty, our female basketball team at Madison Square Garden, played out their season on our stage. And as of the last four years the NFL Draft has been held here at the music hall.
When you’re visiting Radio City, great places to eat in the neighborhood are Heartland Brewery, there’s Bar Americaine, and if you’re here for an afternoon show you must go to Rockefellar Center. Many food choices. They have a food court.
