Hi, I’m Steven Kolb, the CEO of The Council of Fashion Designers of America, and I’m here on About.com to tell you how you can participate in Fashion's Night Out.

What Is Fashion's Night Out?

Fashion's Night Out is a global celebration of shopping. It’s one night a year where we encourage people to come out with their friends, their families, their moms, their boyfriends and just spend the night shopping, having a great time. It’s a great way to do something social, and to support local economies at the same time.

History of Fashion's Night Out

Fashion's Night Out started in 2009 as collaboration between American Vogue, The Council of Fashion Designers of America, The City of New York and NYC and Company. It’s the one night when retailers stay open late, and offer shoppers special experiences in the store, lots of entertainment, music, great cuisine, an opportunity to meet the designers behind the label, meet celebrities, but the real stars of Fashion's Night Out are the products, the merchandise. So many designers are working with retailers to create special product that’s only available on Fashion's Night Out and really to go home with something special.

How to Get Involved with Fashion's Night Out

The best way to get involved in Fashion's Night Out is to visit Fashionsnightout.com to see a complete listing of all the stores across the country that are participating in the event. Just click on event listings, look up your state and city and the site will bring you up a complete list of stores and events near you. When you see something you like, click on "add to my night out" and it will save all you favorites. You can search by, location, category, and make a complete itinerary for yourself for that night.

Fashion's Night Out Merchandise

One of the best parts of fashions night out that shoppers really love, is the special Fashion's Night Out collection, which is made up of men’s and women’s tees, some great tote bags, some hats, and all of the merchandise sold, 40% of the proceeds benefits the NYC AIDS fund which is a charity that the fashion industry has supported for a long time.

Fashion's Night Out Goes Social

There are so many ways to participate in Fashion’s Night Out and to let other people know what you’re doing. You can go to Facebook and find the Fashion’s Night Out Fan page and see the activities, daily postings and let other people know what you’re up to and also on twitter you can follow the conversation at our Twitter @FNONYC and be part of the conversation at #FNO. Fashion’s Night Out has truly become a mega-event - we have over 1,000 stores participating in NYC and 250 cities across the country have joined Fashions Night Out. And now for the first time, 200 e-tailers are participating in the event. You don’t have to go out that night you shop from the comfort of your own home and still have all the fun and benefits from Fashion’s Night Out.
