Transcript: Red Lipstick Tips

Aside from that little black dress, the sexiest thing a woman can wear is a perfect red lip. Hi! I'm Kate McCarthy for About.com and today we're going to learn how to apply the perfect red lip.

Red Lips and Skin Tone

When you're doing a red lip, you want to keep the rest of your face clean and simple. Finding the right tone of red is very important. Some people think they can't pull off the red lip - they might just be using the wrong color of red. So, if you're fair-skinned, you want to stick to more of an orange-based brick red, and if you have a darker tone, go ahead and go blood red, and you'll be set.

Apply the Red Lip Color

So, always with lips in general, choose a long-lasting formula - that way you don't have to worry about reapplying a million times a day. You're going to start off in the center, and you're going to build out from there. With red lips, make sure you get all the way inside your lip. And with red, you always want to apply a couple coats so it doesn't fade. If you make a couple mistakes and get it outside of the lip line, it's okay - I'm going to show you how to quickly fix that.

Remove Red Smudges

Pointed Q-tips are a girl's best friend. You're going to take a pointed Q-tip and get some makeup remover, and you're just going to trace along the lip line to make sure everything is balanced and even.

Red Lip Color Finishing Touches

And now you're going to take a reverse lip liner - it's basically just like a concealer pencil - and you're just going to trace the outside of your line. Then you're going to take a brush or a sponge and just blend it right in. Now you're going to take clear gloss and apply all over.

Long Lasting Color Tips

And now we have our perfect red lip! If you're wearing this out to dinner or the club, dancing, whatever you're doing this evening, when you need to reapply, the plus about using a long-lasting lipstick is four hours later - when it actually starts to fade - you can follow the exact line that you already did. So all you need to do is take your red and start in the center and just build it out and blot, and everything's going to fall right back in place.
