Transcript:What to Expect During the Atkins Induction Phase

Hi, I'm Ardis with about.com and today we are going to talk about what you can expect during the Induction Phase of the Atkins diet.

Beginning of the Atkins Induction Phase

The first 14 days of Atkins is often referred to as the induction period. This is a crucial time, and the strictest, where your body learns to start burning carbohydrates as opposed to fat. You will see the most drastic weight loss during this period. This two week time frame can be extended if you have quite a bit of weight to lose and your body is adjusting to it well.

Side Effects of the Atkins Induction Phase

This period may bring some unpleasant side effects as you start to replace carbohydrates with more protein. These side effects are what is referred to as "carb withdrawal" and is your body acclimating to the lower amount of carb intake. These side effects may include headache, nausea, fatigue and sore muscles and usually last only a week.

Atkins is known for having a diuretic effect on your body and will cause you to lose essential vitamins such as potassium and calcium. It is highly recommended that you take a multi-vitamin everyday to replenish these losses.One of the main goals of the induction phase is to induce dietary ketosis. This is when your body uses fat for energy. As your body begins to take in less carbs, its main source of energy, it will turn to fat to keep up energetic levels.

What Happens During the Induction Phase of the Atkins Diet

So our body begins to generate more ketones, another product of fat metabolism and these ketones can be detected in your urine.
