Hi, I'm Scott for About.com. Today, I have a few tips for cooking with shirataki noodles from LowCarbDiets.About.com.
Finding Shirataki Noodles
Shirataki noodles were originally developed in Asia, but they have become popular all around the world. You can usually find them in Asian grocery stores or health food markets. Shirataki noodles come "wet" - usually packed in liquid. They don't have a real taste of their own, however, the liquid they come in can have a distinctive flavor. I find this can be easily washed off by rinsing them in hot water. You can even boil them for a short period to reduce the flavor. You can also cut longer noodles up with kitchen shears into small pieces that are easier to eat.
Uses for Shirataki Noodles
Shirataki noodles are great in Asian noodle dishes, but people have used them in lots of other ways. They come in a variety of shapes. You can often find fettucine, angel hair, spaghetti, as well as asian style Shirataki noodles. They work well in almost any pasta dish. They make a great low-carb alternative to wheat pasta. Fettuccine alfredo is an extremely quick and easy dish to make with shirataki noodles.
Fettuccine Alfredo Ingredients
To get started, you'll need:
- Fettuccine shirataki noodles
- Jar of alfredo sauce
- 2 cloves of minced garlic
- Salt to taste
- Pepper to taste
Cooking Shirataki Fettuccine Alfredo
Begin by boiling the shirataki noodles on medium high until they lose their rubbery texture. Drain them. Heat up the alfredo sauce on medium heat. Add the garlic, salt, and pepper. Blend together. Now add the pasta. Stir thoroughly to coat with the sauce. If you like, you can add veggies. Frozen broccoli or peppers work well. Simply allow them to thaw before adding them to the fettuccine. Mix well and you are ready to serve. For a great chicken alfredo recipe, go to: lowccarbdiets.about.com
