Transcript:How to Peel a Plantain

Hi, I'm Roblé for About.com. Today I'm going to show you have to peel one of these. This is a plantain. They can prove pretty difficult to peel if you don't know what you are doing. After watching this video you will. Here we go.

Instructions for Peeling a Plantain

So, here we have a pot of boiling water. What you want to do is to take your plantain drop it right into the pot and let it boil for about three minutes. Make sure you have one of these. A nice bowl of ice water. We will use this to rapidly cool the plantain after it comes out of the boiling water.

So, three minutes later take your plantain and drop it right into the ice water. Let it sit in here for about 10 minutes so it can show all the way through. So, once you're plantain is cooled you want to take a knife and cut off the tips.

Cutting the Plantain

Next, you want to take about 3 cm of your knife and cut along the ridges of the plantain. Just follow the ridge all the way down the link of the plantain. Repeat this process along all of the ridges. Be careful. Please don't cut yourself.

So, after you've made all of your cuts along the ridges you want to take your knife angle between the ridges and peel back. You see that the skin of the plantain is releasing easily from the flesh. Keep repeating this process all the way around the plantain. You might notice little bits and pieces left on the plantain. Just go ahead and scrape those off. Here you have yourself a nice clean plantain.
