Transcript:How to Make Beef Picadillo

Hi, I am Gina Miller with About.com Food. Today I am making beef picadillo.

Beef Picadillo

If you are looking for a savory and sweet ground beef filling thats delicious in tacos, quesadillas, omelets.Or simply wrapped in lettuce leaves, You will love this Latin American and Caribbean Favorite.

The recipe I am making today will Serve 4-6 people:

Ingredients for Beef Picadillo

To make Beef Picadillo you will need:
  • 3 Tbs. extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1-1/2 lb. lean ground beef
  • 1/3 cup dry red wine
  • 1 small yellow onion, minced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup canned crushed tomatoes
  • 1 tbs nutmeg
  • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/4 cup minced fresh cilantro
  • 10 Soft Flour tortillas OR 1 small head Boston lettuce, cored and leaves separated
  • small pinch of red pepper is optional

Instructions for Making Beef Picadillo

Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook, stirring occasionally and breaking up the meat with the edge of a spoon, until done, about 5 minutes. Add the wine, onion, and garlic and cook, stirring occasionally, until the wine is almost evaporated, about 5 minutes.

Add the tomatoes and cook until the liquid has almost evaporated, 2 to 3 minutes. Season with 1 &1/2 tsp. salt and a few grinds of pepper and nutmeg.

Add a pinch of red pepper for extra spice.

Remove the skillet from the heat and add the cilantro. Serve hot and fill your tortillas or lettuce leaf for wrapping.

You may also want to add one of your favorite salsas for an added touch.
