Transcript:Tips for Growing a Green Lawn

Hi my name is Aaron Dostie for About.com. Today we are going to discuss how to keep your lawn green.

Tips for Growing a Green Lawn

Tip one for keeping your lawn green is to test the Ph of the soil. There are two options of testing the Ph of your soil. You can either buy a probe or you can send off the soil sample to a laboratory. The Ph of the soil should be 6.5 to 6.8 If it is lower than 6.5 than lime is required.

How much lime to put down will depend on the Ph. For example if the Ph of the soil comes back 6.0 the bag of lime will tell you to put down roughly 30 lbs of limestone per 1000 square feet. If it is higher than 7.0. you nee amonium sulfate. How much again depends on the Ph of the soil. If the Ph is 7.2, 7.3 you will probably need twenty to thirty pounds of amonium sulfate per thousand square feet.

More Tips for Growing a Green Lawn

Tip two make sure to mow the cool season grasses at 3 to 3 1/2 inches. For warm season grasses mow it 2 to 3 inches. Cutting to short will stress the lawn out, especially on hot summer days. and if you let the grass grow to long you will also stress the lawn out because you are cutting more than one third of the blade at any given point. The reason that you cut the top third of the grass blade is because the bottom 2/3 is the critical part of the grass plant.

Additional Tips for Growing a Green Lawn

Tip three for keeping your lawn green is to sharpen your mower blades. You want to sharpen your mower blades two to three times per year. Dull mower blades will lead to longer recovery times for the grass plant in between mowings. It makes it very difficult for the grass plant to heal itself. Sharp mower blades will leave clean straight cuts on the ends of the grass blade. Therefore keeping your lawn healthy and green the way it should be.

Under wet conditions you want increase the rate of fertilizer to 3/4 to 1 pound of nitrogen per thousand square feet. and lastly under dry conditions you wan to decrease the amount of fertilizer you put down to 1/4 to 1/2 pound of nitrogen per thousand square feet. For those who donʼt know what the nitrogen number is, itʼs the first number on a fertilizer bag.

Tip five for keeping your lawn green is the most important one of all of them, and that is watering. Watering is required to keep your lawn green. Rain will help but it will not be enough.
