Hi, I'm Paul Filice, President of Miner's ACE Hardware, and I'm here to talk to you today about lawn: seeds, sod, we're going to cover it all.
Seeding a Lawn
When seeding a lawn, you have a lot of options. You can purchase any type of grass seed that may be specific to your region, and that's important. Please consult a local professional on which seed is appropriate for your area.
You do want to make sure you have some in-ground sprinklers in place before you seed; it will help with the watering of the plants. An advantage of choosing the seeding option for your lawn is it's going to be less expensive to start. You are going to have to care for it a little more meticulously, but you will save money in the short run.
Disadvantages of Seeding Your Lawn
One other thing to consider when seeding a lawn is if you have a severe weather storm, and lots of rain, it could wash out your project. Also, you're going to have to keep pets and people off your lawn. This usually entails roping off an area, which is not the most aesthetically pleasing thing, so please consider that before you choose seed.
Laying Sod on Your Lawn
Let's talk about sod for a minute. Some of the benefits of doing sod are that you're going to get some instant results. Most areas can be done in less than one day. You're going to add green to your neighborhood and increase the value of your home instantly.
Disadvantages of Laying Sod on Your Lawn
Some of the drawbacks of doing sod are it's extremely labor intensive, so if you're going to do it yourself, make sure you enlist some of your friends to come over on that weekend that you do it.
Another common thing that happens with sod is the edges of the sod will dry out frequently, so make sure that you're watering enough, and make sure that the strips of sod are joined properly when you install. And those are some things to consider when choosing sod versus seed to plant your lawn.
