Transcript:Intro to Landscape Design
Hi, my name is Jonathan Yevin with Modern Urban Design landscaping in New York for About.com. Today we're going to discuss a basic overview of landscape design. Landscape design involves the manipulation and maintenance of an outdoor area for either aesthetic or practical purposes.
Two Aspects of Landscape Design
There are two aspects of landscaping: hardscape and softscape. Your hardscape is your patios, your fences, your walls, your benches, your planting beds, your urns, your pergolas. Softscape on the other hand is your plants, your trees, your ground covers, your grasses, things of that nature.
Key Terms for Landscape Design
Whether you are working on a large public area or your own private backyard, there are a few key terms and methods to keep in mind: the difference between annual and perennials; configuration -- specific arrangement of spatial elements; connectivity -- spatial continuity of a habitat or cover type.
Consider Scale in Landscape Design
The concept of scale refers to the size of elements in the garden in relation to one another. Scale might seem obvious, but still requires a little forethought.
Consider Curves Versus Straight Lines in Landscape Design
Curvy lines have a more natural, flowing effect while straight lines and right angles are more forceful, and direct. Over here we have a raised bed made of stacked stones in a curve, the deepest part of which is a natural place for a planting. And that was just a basic overview of landscape design.
