Hi, I'm Paul Filice, President of Miner's ACE Hardware, and I'm here today of behalf of About.com to talk to you about some common issues we have with pets in our neighborhoods. Today I'm going to talk about dogs and keeping them off your lawn. There are several things you can do to keep them off your lawn.
Using Fences to Keep Dogs off Your Lawn
One, let's make sure that your backyard is fenced completely if you don't have a dog; that'll keep them out of your backyard. You can also do things like an electric fence, which is a little more aggressive and I don't highly recommend, but it will keep dogs and other pets and animals out of your yard.
Using Flood Lights and Sprays to Keep Dogs Off Your Lawn
For front yard solutions, there are a few things you can do. There's something called “Spray Away,” which is a motion sensor, which is going to spray water at animals or any pests that come into the sensored area.
Another thing you can do to keep dogs out of your yard, especially at night, are motion sensor lights. So, a lot of people have these already. These'll be triggered by motion at night, and it'll illuminate your yard and then dogs will usually be scared off by that.
Using Unappealing Smeels to Keep Dogs Off Your Lawn
Another solution would be granules and sprays; they disappeal to a dog's sense of smell. They'll keep them out of your yard and they can be applied anywhere safely. Sprays are very spot-specific. If you know that a dog is commonly using one area of your lawn or garden, use a spray. Granules can be applied more thoroughly throughout your yard to keep them out completely.
One last common solution that you may already have in your home (but can also be purchased at your local hardware store) is white vinegar. And again with the vinegar, you're just disappealing to their sense of smell, but be careful--you don't want to put that on plants in most cases. And those are some common solutions to keep dogs out of your yard.
