Hi, my name is Jonathan Yevin with Modern Urban Design landscaping in New York for About.com. Today we're learning how to create focal points in landscaping using instructions from About.com's Landscaping site.
What Are Focal Points in Landscaping?
A focal point by definition is something that draws the eye. This could be something that is strategically placed or occurs naturally, and built around it. Focal points are used in a landscape design to create a sense of symmetry or contrast. There are many ways to create focal points in a landscape, but in order for these techniques to work you must be working with an un-cluttered landscape that is free of loose debris or any other unintended objects.
Consider Size When Creating Focal Points in Landscaping
The amount of focal points that you are working with and their placement is largely dependant on the size of your landscape. If you are working with a large plot of land, you may be able to experiment more with multiple focal points. If your land is much smaller, then you may want to consider limiting then to just a few.
Two Types of Focal Points in Landscaping
There are two main types of focal points: natural and non-natural. Natural elements may consist of specific plant or tree types that stand out from the rest. Unnatural elements may consist of fountains, benches, chairs, swings, bird feeders or statues.
Trees Can Be Focal Points in Landscaping
If you're not able to move a large existing tree, then rather than cutting it down you can build around it. Some trees just need a good pruning to make for a good focal point. Over here we have taller plants in front of smaller plants, which creates a very natural looking focal point in a flower bed. And those are just a few introductory tips for creating focal points in Landscaping.
