Hi, I'm Rachel Edelman for About.com Food. Today I am going to show you how to make kasha varnishkes.

Kasha Varnishkes Ingredients

For this recipe, you will need:
  • 1 package cooked bowtie noodles
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 1 chopped onion
  • 1 cup kasha
  • 1 egg
  • 14.5 oz. chicken stock
  • 2 tablespoons melted margarine
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper

Heat the Onion

In a heavy frying pan, pour in the oil. Once it is hot, add the onions. Saute the onions for about 5 minutes and then remove them from the pan and set aside.

Boil the Soup Stock

Meanwhile, in a saucepan, bring 2 cups of soup stock to a boil.

Mix the Kasha and Egg

In a separate bowl, pour the egg and beat it. Next, add the kasha, and stir it into the egg so that all the kernels are coated.

Heat the Kasha

Now, pour the egg-covered kasha into the frying pan. Fry over high heat, stirring, until the egg has dried and kernels are separate, this may take about 3 minutes.

Cook the Kasha Varnishkes

Pour the boiling soup stock over the kasha. Next, add the onion and the salt and pepper. Cover and simmer on low heat until all the liquid has been absorbed. This may take about 10-15 minutes.

Add the Final Kasha Varnishkes Ingredients

While the kasha is still warm, stir in the bowtie noodles. Finally, pour over the melted margarine and mix it together. Serve and enjoy.
