Hi, I'm Kaytie Sproul here for About.com and today we're going to make a sweet beef brisket with using cola.

The brisket is a cut that comes from the chest. It's usually a well-marbled and flavorful cut of beef, however, if it is prepared improperly it can be very tough. That's why, instead of roasting the brisket we're going to braise it. The result will be a tender and mouthwatering dish.

Ingredients for the Beef Brisket With Soda

You will need:

  • a 4-6 lb. brisket of beef
  • 1 medium onion
  • 3-6 cloves of garlic
  • 2 stalks of celery
  • 1 cup of cola, not diet
  • 1 cup of tomato sauce or ketchup
  • 1 packet of onion soup mix
  • 2 tbs of olive oil
  • a roasting pan

Prepare the Beef Brisket With Soda

Begin by chopping your celery. Then slice your onion. Do not dice -- keeping the pieces big will make for great caramelized onions. Now chop your garlic. The amount you use depends on taste. I like a lot of garlic, so I'm using 6 cloves.

Line your roasting pan with about a third of your onions. These will infuse the brisket and the sauce with a great flavor. Next you'll coat your brisket with the olive oil. Then season it with the pepper and kosher salt. Add the brisket to the roasting pan, fat side up, and garnish with the remainder of the vegetables.

In a mixing bowl add your cola and tomato sauce. If you choose to use ketchup for an even sweeter taste, cut the measurement down to half a cup. Then add your soup mix and whisk together gently.

Braise the Beef Brisket With Soda

Once mixed, pour over your brisket as evenly as possible. Then cover your roasting pan with foil. Braising the beef will help it retain moisture and will deliver a tender meat.

Set the oven for 325 and cook for 3 hours or until the internal temperature of the brisket is 190 degrees.

Slice the brisket into thin strips and serve with a side of parve mashed potatoes for a hearty kosher meal any family can enjoy.
