Transcript:How to Make Pom Poms

Hi I'm Anik St Louis for About.com and I'm a knitting and crochet teacher with Mouliné Yarns. Today we are going to learn how to make pom-poms.

Supplies for Making Pom Poms

Here's what you will need:
  • A pair of scissors
  • two rings drawn on an old cereal box (I used a glass and a coin)
  • and some yarn

Instructions for Knitting Pom Poms

Cut your two pieces and just put them together. So you take a long piece of yarn. Simply tuck the ends right into the centre of the loop and start wrapping. You are going through the middle over and over again until you run out of yarn. Now if you run out of yarn before the pom pom is thick enough simply cut another piece of yarn, make sure that you tuck in that little end and keep wrapping.

Once you have finished wrapping cut about a 12 inch piece of the same yarn and just have it ready. Here comes the fun part. With your scissors gently cut all the way around the top of the circle. All the way to the card board. You will see as soon as it is exposed it is a lot easier just to stick the scissors between the two and then you cut all the way around. Gently separate the two pieces of cardboard, just enough to slide in your yarn and tie tightly in a knot and put another one just to make sure that it does not come apart. Gently hold one side of the pom pom and pull off the cardboard. There you have your pom pom. If you need to take your scissors and trim. Give it a little haircut. Here's my pom pom attached to my hat.
