Hi, I am Angela de Jong-Angelici for About.com Parenting. Halloween is a fun and spooky holiday. And kids love making scary treats. There are many treats you can make with your kids. For this program we will demonstrate how to make coffin sandwiches and a slimy punch.
Prepare Your Little Chefs
First, get your kids ready to work in the kitchen. This means washing hands, pulling back longer hair and putting on an apron. How to Make Coffin Sandwiches
Coffin sandwiches are great for parties. You will need bread, a bread knife and fixings to make a sandwich. First trace a coffin shape onto a piece of paper and cut it out. You can use the paper as your pattern to help you cut your bread. The pattern will help keep all your bread the same size. Make sure and gently slide the knife back and forth so you do not tear the bread. And you can do more than one slice at a time. Now spread on peanut butter and jelly. Or add meat and cheese. You can also use cookie cutters to cut patterns in the bread. Pumpkins are great to use and ghosts and skeletons are too. Use the patterns to cut out your bread. Make sure and press hard enough to cut completely through the bread, then pop the bread out of the cutter. Kids will have fun using the patterns on the bread. Now add your toppings. It will make for a ghostly sandwich.
Make a Sandwich "Graveyard"
Take all of your sandwiches and create a graveyard of sandwiches. Save all of the leftover crusts and bread and take it to the park and feed the ducks.Make Slimy Punch
Now you need a slimy punch to wash down your sandwiches. A great punch to make is to take lime sherbet and pour lemon-lime soda over it. It makes a nice green color. For an added effect, make an ice hand to float in your punch. Take a glove and wash it out with soap and water. Rinse thoroughly. Now fill with water and tie it off with a rubber band. Place it in the freezer until it freezes solid. Remove the glove from the ice. Now add your ice hand to the punch for an eerie effect. Your little monsters will line up for this punch.Halloween is a fun holiday and kids love dressing up and making fun treats. To learn more, visit us on the web at parenting.about.com.
