Hi, my name is Monica Willis, I'm the owner of Corduroy Kid in Brooklyn, New York, I'm here with About.com and we're going to be looking at how to dress your kids for the winter.Layering Kids Clothes for Winter
It's all about layers for the winter. It's really the most important thing you can do is to layer, layer, layer, because this is what traps the warmth between all of the different layers and keeps your child warm. So, at the very beginning you know, do a T-shirt or a onesie, underneath a long sleeved T-Shirt, and then you'll put the sweater on, and then of course you really need to invest in a really good quality down winter jacket.Great Winter Jackets for Kids
So, we have an example here of one. You'll see it's puffy, it's got the down, it's got a hood, which is really important as well. It's going to keep your child warm in the winter. It's got pockets for the kids, but mostly it's lightweight and warmer. A lot of the wool jackets can get quite heavy for your kids, so I think this is probably one of the times when I really do advocate artificial fibers is winter time.Winter Hat Options for Kids
In winter, it's really important to keep kid's heads covered. We lose 80% of our body heat through our heads. There are a lot of different hat options for kids in the winter. We love this at Corduroy kid and we've, the parents love this as well - it also has a neck piece to keep the kid's, the neck warm as well and it's made actually out of 100 percent cotton, so, it doesn't get itchy like wool will. Also, anything with ear flaps and a strap is really great. It keeps - this is an artificial fake fur which is warm and soft. Has the ear flaps, it looks cute so the boys love it, it has a chin strap it'll keep your hat on. Same sort of thing - it's light and polar fleece. Again, it's another great soft fabric which will keep your baby and your children's head warm for the winter.
Mittens and Gloves for Winter
Another important thing is to think about what you're going to put on your children's hands and feet. We suggest mittens over and above gloves because they're easier to get on, it's only one thumb, rather than trying to get all 5 little fingers in. But also, when your hands are together it'll keep the warmth in your hand a lot more than if they're separated. You can get mittens like this which are lined in polar fleece which will keep them extra warm. Some mittens like this style is really great. It has a zipper and it's more of a snow mitten. Very easy to get on and off for your children, so they won't get frustrated.Winter Footwear for Kids
In terms of feet and footwear it's really good to go with boots that are lined in a fake fur to give them extra warmth. There's also for the older kid when you've got your snow boot it's also lined in fur. It's very snug on the inside with a sheerling lining.Girls especially love leg warmers for the winter. This is another way of layering. Both boys and girls styles Most of the pants are now starting to be lined in polar fleece, and jeans, they do this across the board. And, this is a fantastic way of keeping kid's legs warm - as well because the wind really goes through these jeans.
So again, in the winter, it's really all about keeping your kids warm and comfortable. And obviously this works with layers.
