Video:Clothes for Easy Dressing

with Monica Willis

Some kids have an uncanny habit of wriggling their way out of anything you attempt to put on them. Make your morning fly by faster by ditching all those buttons, laces, and belts and instead try these easy morning outfits on for size.

Transcript:Clothes for Easy Dressing

Hi, my name is Monica, I'm the owner of Corduroy Kid in Brooklyn, New York, and I'm here with About.com. We're going to be looking at some clothes that are going to help your 2 to 5 year olds learn how to dress themselves - clothes that are very easy, simple for the kids to get out the door in the morning.

Compromise With Your Child's Tastes

This is an age where actually both boys and girls are going to start really telling you what they want to wear. And they're going to become fiercely independent. So, you have to sort of roll with that a little bit. Go with the colors they like, but guide them into some easy styles.

Find Shifty Shapes That Go on Easily

For instance, this is a great simple dress. It's got an envelope neckline - very easy for kids to pull on and off. It's still super cute, has a lot of fun details for the girls that like cats and embellishments. Another really great style that's easy, just simple shifty shapes, has an elastic neckline. Again, very easy for the girls to pull on and off - it's something pretty and fun, and comfortable. Another great sort of style is a tunic style. Again, it has a really wide neck, very deep arm holes, for them to play in. Most kids spend all the day playing. So, again, it's really just something you can slip on and off.

Find Elastic Pants

The boys, I would definitely keep with elastic pants. There're quite a lot out now that have great style. They don't all have to all look completely elastic wasted. So you have styles like this, with the Velcro - easy for the boys to get on and off. A lot of style, very urban. There's also, more of a classic cargo pant with patch pockets, elastic wasted.

What to Avoid on Kid Clothes

Keep away from buttons, snaps, buckles, belts - things that really frustrate kids when they're trying to learn to dress themselves.

Trade Snaps for Buttons

Again for the boys, obviously, just t-shirts. What boy doesn't love to just pull on a t-shirt? So easy! If you're going to do a button down shirt, I would suggest avoiding buttons, because they're so small and so hard. But there's definitely button down shirts that have conquered that for boys by using snaps. And boys find that a little more interesting as a challenge to overcome. Snaps are easy to pull on and off. There's a great trick, where you can put your thumb behind and the boy can just go up to a wall and push themselves into the wall and it'll close the snap, rather than getting too fussy about getting the two ends to meet.

Skirts for Ease of Dressing

Along with elastic wasted outfits, I think a really good one for the girls is skirts. There's really stylish, cute, fun play skirts, and are all elastic wasted. You can do something like this - really simple, and a lot of personality for the kids who are really developing their self image.

So, as you can see, these are some great ideas for some simple easy styles of clothing that will really give your kids the confidence they need. Then they can move onto master buttons, zippers - all those fun things that are going to be on their clothes over the next couple of years.
