Hi! I’m Arlene Kashkin for About.com. We’re at Kash In The Kitchen in Port Washington, New York and today I’m going to show you how to prepare for Passover.

Passover Preparation Should Begin Days in Advance

There are three easy steps in preparing for Passover, these steps are cleaning the house of leavened products, preparing for the Seder and purchasing the foods needed for the Passover celebration. Preparation for Passover can begin as early before Passover as you’d like, most people start preparing a few days before.

The first step is to remove all the chametz from your home. Chametz means all products that are leavened products such as all types of bread and any food with yeast. These products can be donated or destroyed.

Consider the Kind of Passover Ceremony You are Hosting

Next, you will need to think about what kind of Passover ceremony you would like to have. The haggadah is the prayer book for Passover and you can find Haggadah’s online and at your local food stores around Passover. Most haggadah’s are very similar and contain the traditional prayers, songs and four questions required for the Seder. You will need to do a little research, because some haggadah’s will result in longer ceremonies than others.

Now, you will need to purchase the items needed for the Seder plate. This includes a shank bone, a green vegetable, a hard boiled egg, charoset, bitter herbs and a bitter vegetable. It is very important to make sure that you use plates and silverware that is different from your everyday kitchenware. Some families purchase a set of Kosher dishes that are used only at Passover.

Be Sure to Buy the Required Kosher Foods

Lastly, you will need to go Kosher food shopping. Your local market should have a variety of products in a special Passover section. You will need to purchase matzoh for the Passover Seder and the Afikomen. There are many different options for each course of your Passover meal. If you follow these steps, preparing for your Passover Seder will be organized and easy. To learn more about Passover and other holidays, please visit About.com. Thank you so much for watching.
