Transcript:Tips for Conducting an Online IT Job Search

Hi, I'm IT Career Counselor Christine Jorgensen, for About.com and today we're  talking about IT jobs. Finding an IT job can be a challenging task, but if you know where to look and how to present yourself, you'll have an easier time.

Have a Polished Resume Before You Start Your IT Career Search

First, make sure you have your resume and cover letter fully polished, updated, and copy edited. Also, be sure you chose a format that best fits the type of job you're applying for.

Check out Your Dream Company's Career Website First

Now, onto searching for that dream job. If you have a specific company in mind that you'd like to work for, your best bet would be to go directly to their website and see if they have any job openings. If they don't they may allow you to make an account, and at least send your resume in for them to keep on file.

Utilize Career Search Websites

If you don't have a specific company you want to work for you may want to use a tech oriented job search site. One example of this is Techcareers.com. This site will allow you to search for IT and engineering jobs in any state in the country. You can also post your resume on the site for employers to see. If techcareers.com doesn't work for you, you may want to use a broader search engine such as monster or Indeed.com. These sites are slightly more generic, but allow you to type in key words, and the site will show you jobs in that field. Another feature of these sites is that they allow you to make a profile for yourself.

Build a LinkedIn Profile to Showcase Your IT Qualifications Online

Linkedin is a great example of a site that allows you to make a profile. It is a social networking and job search site all in one. You can connect with people you may know and employers as well. When making a profile for yourself on any site, you want to make sure you give a potential employer the best information possible. If the site asks you to upload a picture, make sure it is a professional one. In addition to your resume, the site may also ask you for additional facts about yourself. You want to be as specific as possible, and proofread your profile before you submit it to the site.

Stand Out From Other Applicants

You are competing for very few jobs against a lot of people so you want to make sure you stand out against them. If you are a recent college graduate, collegegrad.com is another great search engine for entry-level jobs and internships. If you are a seasoned veteran you may want to try to the other search engines first.

Hopefully now you have a better idea about how to find an IT job online. Thanks for watching. If you'd like to learn more please visit us on the web at About.com
