Hi I’m IT Career Counselor Christine Jorgensen for About.com, and today I’m going to talk about writing a resume for network engineers.
How to Open Your Engineering Resume
Finding an IT job can be a challenging task, but if you know where to look and how to present yourself, you’ll have an easier time. When tailoring your resume for a network engineering position, you’ll want to open with your pertinent information: Name, address, email, and phone number. Beneath that you’ll want to give a professional, brief self-summary written in the third person. Here’s an example: “Results-driven, customer-focused, articulate, and analytical Network Engineer who can think outside the box. Strong in design and integration problem solving skills. Expert at email system management and virus protection.” It’s best to make these into bullet points. Though it might sound strange to write sentences without a subject, it would look even more bizarre to write from the first person.
List Your Skills Clearly in Your Resume to Get Noticed by Employers
Beneath that, it would be advisable to list your software skills and other related skill sets. Even if you have listed them again in your previous job descriptions, list them all in one place at the top of your resume to make it easy for potential employers to make a quick reference.
How to List Your Previous Job Experience
Next, list your previous job experience. Beneath each employer, give a few detailed bullet points on the jobs and duties performed at that job in strong, active language. For example, say you worked for Facebook. Here’s what a couple descriptors of that job would look like:
Facebook, Palo Alto, CA Jan 2004–Jul 2009
Network Engineer
- Installing, supporting and maintaining new server hardware and software infrastructure
- Managing email, anti-spam, and virus protection
- Monitoring network usage
How to List Your Educational Background on Your Resume
Then list your educational background. The list should go in order of most recent or most advanced degree first, down to your lowest level college or community college degree. Hopefully now you have a better idea of how to compile a resume for a network engineer position.
