Transcript:What Is a Resume Objective?

Hello, I'm Milo for About.com and today were talking about resume objectives, what they are, when to use them, and how to write them.

What is an Objective Statement?

It's common and advisable to tailor your cover letter with an objective statement to the company and position you're applying for. In addition, the best resumes will also have objective statements. They are a sort of personal career mission statement, outlining your professional goals.

There are times however when it is helpful to tailor the objective on your resume to the position your applying for as well. Not only does it add a layer of thoughtfulness, a specific objective shows how you are focusing your intentions and that you are serious.

How to Write an Objective Statement

Think of three things when writing your objective statement. First it should be very clear and tangible, to the point. If tailored to a specific company it should mention the position you are applying for. If the objective is intended to be general you can still mention the kind or level of position you are targeting.

Finally, it should mention what you are bringing, experience, your world view, and or passion.

Where to Place the Objective Statement

The objective statement is usually at the top of the resume under contact information. It serves as a brief introduction and therefore may also serve as your opportunity to make a first impression.

Examples of Objective Statements

These basic examples and much more can be found on our guide site.

"Management position where I can effectively utilize my expertise in human relations, project management, and staff recruitment and retention."

"Marketing position that utilizes my writing skills and enables me to make a positive contribution to the organization."

"Search engine optimization position where I can use my SEO skills and experience to increase site traffic and search engine placement."

"To obtain a position that will enable me to use my strong organizational skills, educational background, and ability to work well with people."
