Transcript:How to Job Search on FacebookHi. I’m Alison Doyle, the job search guide for About.com. Facebook, in addition to the social networking everyone uses it for, can also be used for professional networking.
Here are do’s and don’ts for using Facebook when you’re job searching.
Control Your Privacy SettingsFacebook can help your job search, if you’re smart about how you use it. Or, it can hinder your job search if you’re not careful. If you don’t set your privacy options carefully, everything you post on Facebook could be seen by your current employer or a prospective employer. Inappropriate postings have cost job seekers offers and have caused employees to be fired.
Manage Your Facebook Identity CarefullyWhen you’re job searching, it’s important to manage your Facebook page carefully so information that should be kept private isn’t shared with anyone and everyone. Take a close look at your Profile and decide what you want business contacts or prospective employers to see - and what you don't. Clean up your Facebook page before you start to job search.
Manage your privacy settings so only people you want can view your photos and posts. When set appropriately, you can limit what the outside world – and your friends – can see on Facebook. Be careful about the photos you upload and what you say. Also be careful about the Groups you belong to and the Pages you like. Some aren’t appropriate to have on your page if you’re job seeking.
Facebook Resources for Job SeekersOn the plus side, there is lots of good information for job seekers on Facebook – job sites pages, company pages, job search advice, and groups and apps that can help you job search. With lots of job search applications to choose from, Facebook is becoming more than just a social networking site. There are a variety of Facebook applications that can be used as part of your job search.
Connect With CompaniesWhen you’re interested in working for a specific company, you can “like” their page and get updates and company news. Job seekers can also get job search tips and advice directly on Facebook.
When you use job search engine SimplyHired to find job listings, clicking on the "Who Do I Know" button at the top of the search results will let you see your Facebook friends at the companies you’re interested in without having to leave the site.
Create a Positive ImpressionIt doesn’t take much to clean up your Facebook presence, but it’s important to spend the time so you’re not caught by surprise when your boss or a company that is interested in hiring you sees something inappropriate on Facebook. You need to make a positive impression online – wherever a prospective employer might be able to find you.
