Hi I'm Tim Tyrell-Smith, Marketing Coach & Career Strategist at TimsStrategy.com. I'm here today on behalf of About.com to talk to you about steps for choosing a career. Choosing your career is a big job.
Important Factors to Consider When Choosing a Career
There is so much information to choose from, so many resources, and lots of opinions about what you should be doing with your work life. So here are some tips to help you think through what might be a great career for you.
Basics When Choosing a Career
First, what is your best work location? Where would you like to spend time working: in a hotel room somewhere, at a home office, in a big, huge corporate location? Think about where you will do your best work. Next, do you require a certain work-life balance? How often do you want to be home, verses traveling on the road? Do you need a home-cooked meal every night? How important is it to be with your kids each and every weekend? These are questions that you have to ask yourself as you choose your career.
Choosing a Career
Third, do you want your career to have a giving-back component? Meaning that a part of what you do, or a part of the company that you belong to, gives back to the community, makes the world a better place? If so, think about that as you choose your next career.
Finally, and here’s the big question, how much money do you want to make during your career? You might be single now, 5 years from now you might have a family and 2 kids, so think about how important is money and how much money will you need because certain careers will deliver more value financially. I hope these tips will give you some new ideas as to how to choose your next career. We want you to be happy!
