Transcript:Different Wedding Band Styles

Hi. I'm Abbott Taylor from Abbott Taylor Jewelers in Tucson, Arizona, here for About.com.

Now we're going to talk about wedding band. Wedding bands can be like anything else, a true work of art or it can be plain and simple, starting with the plainest and most simple band. A round wedding band can come in any width, narrower, wider, white gold, yellow gold, with no ornamentation or with a lot of ornamentation.

Eternity Wedding Band Style

One version might be a completely paved band covered with diamonds from front to back. These are called eternity bands. An eternity band is when the diamonds go all the way around and the pattern continues all the way around the piece.

In this particular case, we have some sapphires interlaced with pierced design work and diamonds that go around the entire piece. And, you can even have two-toned band, where you have different colors of metals used in the same band. Don't feel like you have to stay with diamonds. Diamonds are not the only way to have an engagement ring or a wedding ring.

Precious Stones in a Wedding Band

Here's an unusual example of something for an engagement ring or a wedding band, with a trillion-cut sapphire in it and diamonds. Here's a wedding band with an emerald as a center stone and diamonds on the side. Very different, very unusual and it sets you aside as somebody who wants something different. There are square bands, flat bands, round bands, half round bands, curved bands, textured bands. There's so many different ideas.

Unusual Wedding Band Styles

This is a flat band that has a square outside shape. And, so, here we have a look at an antique filigree piece. Of course it's not antique, it's newly made, however, it has that feeling of antiquity. Here's filigree detail work that's just not seen commonly in most wedding bands nowadays.

So, here's something a little bit more unusual a little step from the ordinary. And this type of setting is called scatter set. The stones are actually set below the surface with a very very soft satin finish.

Tips for Picking a Wedding Band

I recommend that when you look at a piece and you see something that tickles you in the least bit of way, keep a copy of that picture. Go from piece to piece until you find a half a dozen different ideas that ring a bell with you. And, when you find those ideas you're going to narrow down your search.
