Transcript:Options for Wedding Rings Cuts

Hi. I'm Abbott Taylor from Abbott Taylor Jewelers in Tucson, Arizona, here for About.com. Let's talk about different stone shapes in wedding rings. Not everybody wants to have a separate engagement and wedding band, and quite frequently you'll have a wedding band that serves both purposes. There are many different shapes of diamonds. The shape of the stone is particular to the individual and any wedding band that you get you'll want to have something that reflects your personal desires and your personal needs.

Princess-Cut Wedding Rings

In this case, we have a princess-cut diamond, surrounded by little round diamonds, with an antique engraving on it that is reminiscent of the days of long ago when Grandma and Grandpa used to have an engagement ring or a wedding band similar to this. Many of you may recognize this. This is a three-stone engagement ring/wedding band that has become very popular in the last few years.

Marquis and Pear-Cut Wedding Rings

Here we have a marquis diamond, set with fancy yellow diamonds on the side and white gold with diamonds surrounding the top. And, also, if you can look closely, diamonds underneath the crown of the stone, just for an added surprise accent. The marquis diamond is pointed at both end, with rounded sides and makes something truly unique and different.

Here's a similar stone, a pear-shaped stone. A pear-shaped stone has a point at the front and rounded at the back and sides and gives a most unique look to an engagement ring or wedding band.

Emerald-Cut Wedding Rings

This particular wedding band happens to have diamonds paved along the sides. But it still shows off the center stone as being a dominant part of the design. Not everyone likes an emerald cut diamond. Emerald cut diamonds are the old rectangular shape of stone, with step cuts on the side. Very simple, very elegant, but not as bright and brilliant as the modern-cut princess diamond which is also rectangular. However, it's just that specific subtlety that makes an emerald cut a really special unique kind of stone for a wedding band.

Pave Wedding Rings

Sometimes we'll have a need to have a stone in a band, where the band itself becomes sparkly, defined by a pave look with a simple outside edge. In this case, we have a princess-cut stone in the center and pave diamonds on the side. Again, something unique and different because it's two toned. Yellow gold on the outside, white gold on the inside, with a princess cut and the rounds pave.

Eternity Wedding Rings

Wedding bands can also be narrow bands that go along with engagement rings and there's a wide style design choice there as well. These are both eternity bands, meaning that the stones go all the way around. And here we have a very very modern stark look, called channel setting. Where you have an outside bar of gold, in this case, white gold, and inside you have a line of princess cut diamonds – where there's no separation and no prongs between the stones, but simple and only these outside bars which hold the stones in place. Very very different from the pave look.
