Hello, my name is Dai Ishiguro for About.com. Today, I'm going to teach you how to say, "How are you?" in Japanese.

"How Are You" in Informal Japanese

The informal way we say Ge-n-ki, Genki? Ge-n-ki, Genki? That's a casual way of saying, "How are you?".  Genki, Ge-n-ki? Genki? Ge-n-ki, Genki?

"How Are You" in Formal Japanese

And the formal way we say, "Ge-n-ki-De-su-ka, Genki-Desuka? Ge-n-ki-De-su-ka, Genki-Desuka? Genki-Desuka?" That's the formal way of saying, "How are you?"

So the informal way of saying, "How are you?" is "Ge-n-ki, Genki?" The formal way, we say, Ge-n-ki-De-su-ka, Genki-Desuka?"
